This week Trader Joe’s expanded its earlier lot-specific recall of its store brand chocolate chip granola bars due to possible salmonella contamination.
On its web site, Trader Joe’s wrote to its customers: “We have been alerted by our supplier … that there is a possibility that the product may cause a serious food-borne illness. All Use by Dates/Lot Codes for the item are being voluntarily recalled. As a precaution, all of the product has been removed from sale and has been destroyed. To date, we have no confirmed reports of illness related to this product.”
The Monrovia, Calif.-based operator’s Chocolate Chip Chewy Granola Bars, distributed nationally in 7.4-ounce boxes, are manufactured by Bloomfield Bakery, a subsidiary of Ralcorp Holdings Inc., according to media reports. While the FDA investigates the case, Bloomfield Bakery is suspending production of the granola bars.
Customers who purchased the granola bars were urged by Trader Joe’s, which operates 339 stores nationally, to “please return the product (full or empty) to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund or dispose of it. At Trader Joe's, there is nothing more important to us than the safety of our customers and crew, and the quality of our products. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
