Tesco store frontAlthough 40 percent of U.K. consumers believe lower-cost store brands contain more salt than nationally known brands, a recent study by Consensus Action on Salt & Health reveals otherwise. U.K. store brands have considerably less sodium than consumer packaged goods brands, according to an article in the Daily Mail.

The study compared the salt levels in several brands of sliced bread, breakfast cereal, tomato ketchup, pasta sauces, and fresh and canned soups. Leading brands such as Kellogg's, Heinz, and Duchy Originals were compared to Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda store brands.

Researchers found that national brand bread had nearly twice the levels of sodium than store brands. Specifically, Kellogg's Corn Flakes contained three times more sodium than Tesco's value cereal and twice as much as recommended levels. Meanwhile Heinz Ketchup contained more than three times more sodium than Asda's Smart Price brand of tomato ketchup.
