Niel Golub, president and CEO of Price Chopper supermarkets, said store brands will continue to grow because the consumer has been forever transformed by the recession and the quality of retail store brands.
“Recession shopping behaviors will likely be extended and might well be ingrained. Private brand growth will continue,” Golum told FMI dailyLead. “Consumers see private labels as equal -- or even superior -- to national brands.”
In August, Nielsen reported that private label sales were up 7.4 percent compared to the previous year.
“The consumer will continue to demand quality products for a good price and will reward retailers that give them the shopping experience that meets their needs,” Golum said. “Retailers will continue to invest in private brands, seeking the consumer's loyalty.
Based in Schenectady, N.Y., Price Chopper operates 115 stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont.
