safeway store frontGrocery store brands have been gaining ground over the past 10 years in various panel tastings sponsored by the San Francisco Chronicle. In the end, it comes down to taste, not the label, the newspaper reported.

In its Taster's Choice column, which has panelists such as local chefs, cookbook authors and food professionals continuously testing products blind, "time and again, they find that grocery store brands come out on top," according to the report. "In fact, in the 44 tastings from 2009, more than one-third of the winners were grocery store brands."

Furthermore, 17 products made it to the newspaper's Hall of Fame, "an honor we reserve for those products scoring 80 or higher on our 100-point scale."

For tastings the newspaper typically purchases products at eight Bay Area retailers -- Safeway, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Rainbow Grocery Cooperative, Cala Foods, Draeger's, Mollie Stone's and Andronico's. Store brands at Safeway, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods often are top panelist picks.

Here are the winners of the newspaper's 2009 Taster's Choice tastings.
