After postponing its Texas debut by nearly six months, Aldi will open its first Texas store in Dallas on March 19, followed by 10 more store openings April 23 and an additional six stores May 14, according to a Planet Retail report.
Last fall, Aldi completed construction of its 152,000 square-foot distribution center in Denton, Texas. The $50 million warehouse, which will serve the new stores, is expected to come online this month, according to the report.
Aldi, with store brands comprising more than 80 percent of its assortment, operates approximately 1,000 stores in 29 states. Rhode Island and Florida were new markets in 2008; the Texas roll out was originally planned for 2009 but was pushed to 2010.
The average Aldi store sell more than 1,400 of the most frequently purchased grocery and household items, which the company claims fulfill 90 percent of customers' average weekly shopping needs.
Through a select assortment approach and focus on store brands, Aldi passes on savings to consumers with prices up to 50 percent below traditional supermarkets, according to the company's web site, adding it "does not pass on hidden costs such as in-store banking, pharmacies, bagging clerks, check cashing, photo processing or other non-essential grocery store services."
