Several suppliers Wal-Mart uses to sources products for its store brands are seeking entry into the India market, indicating the retailer intends to further grow its store brands business in one of the world\'s fastest growing economies, according to a report on LiveMint.com.
Bharti-Walmart in India currently sells eight of Wal-Mart's store brands - including Great Value --in one wholesale retail store in Amritsar and about 70 Easy Day stores, all owned by Bharti Retail Ltd, according to the report. Great Value categories currently sold in India include tea, local snacks, ketchup, dishwashing soap and household cleaners, according to the report.
Wal-Mart reportedly is facing opposition to its Great Value brand registration in India, according to a separate report in Planet Retail. However, a Bharti-Wal-Mart spokesperson told Planet Retail: \"Wal-Mart has registered Great Value in various countries including India and we aggressively protect it as our intellectual property. Currently, Wal-Mart is not aware of any opposition to our [Great Value] brand but, if necessary, we will take necessary steps to protect it.\"
Bharti-Wal-Mart filed numerous trademark applications including the Great Value logo -- GV in a circle with \'Great Quality. Low Prices\' written on it, the report said. \"The applications were in various categories including baby food, dental wax, dried fruits, jellies and jam, bleaching preparation, soap, cosmetics, hair lotions and others,\" according to information provided to Planet Retail by the trademark office.
Most of those applications are being opposed, according to the trademark office\'s website. It apparently takes about two years to complete the application process in India before being placed in the public domain, according to the report.
Once the application is made public, opposition to the trademark can be filed within four months, trademark lawyers told Planet Retail. Most of Bharti-Wal-Mart\'s applications, which were made public last year, are being opposed, according to the report.
Bharti-Walmart currently sources its private label merchandise from 120 Indian companies, according to the Wall Street Journal\'s LiveMint. Meanwhile, Wal-Mart has been sourcing products for its global operations from India for at least 20 years, the report stated.
