A new survey indicates more Canadians want healthier food and beverage choices and they want companies to be more environmentally accountable, according to a report in The Candian Press

The 7th annual study conducted by BrandSpark, which surveyed more than 25,000 Canadian consumers, also found an increase in store brand purchased over national brands.

"Consumers are demanding companies to be more accountable in terms of their environmental claims, and they are willing to pay for products with realistic and tangible claims such as reduced packaging," said Robert Levy, president of BrandSpark International

When it comes to healthier food and beverage options, Levy said consumers want added health benefits and they are willing to pay more for products that will help prevent illness.

Meanwhile, in a separate news report, Wal-Mart is expanding its Sustainable Product Index program to the Canada market.

The program, originally lunched in the U.S. this past summer, is intended to help customers evaluate the sustainability of the products they purchase, from the raw materials and ingredients used to product disposal.

"Customers want value and quality when buying products," David Cheesewright, President and CEO of Walmart Canada said in a statement. "They also want to know that products are being made in a responsible way.

The program will be rolled out in three phases, with supplier assessment, the first phase, beginning this summer.
