Carrefour store frontTetra Pak will supply more than 100 million Forest Stewardship Council labeled milk and fruit juice carton packages to Carrefour stores across France this year.

The supply agreement is seen as an important milestone in Tetra Pak’s global FSC deployment. In France, the company has set a goal of having FSC labeling on at least 90 percent of the 3 billion packages it annually sells in the country before the end of 2012.

Several years ago Carrefour launched an FSC-certified garden furniture collection that guaranteed sustainable forests management, according to a Planet Retail report.

FSC is the only global standard-setting organization in forest management that independently guarantees a chain of custody from forest to stores.

Achieving the FSC certification enables Tetra Pak to use the FSC label on its packages and is a guarantee that all wood-fiber used in the manufacturing process comes from FSC certified well-managed forests and other controlled sources.

Tetra Pak launched the first FSC-labeled carton package, Tetra Recart, in 2007. The following year, 2008, it sold around 100 million FSC-labeled packages worldwide, and in 2009 it reached more than 2.3 billion new countries.

A significant constraint to making FSC-labeled packages broadly available is the limited supply of FSC certified wood, since only 6 percent of the world’s forests are currently certified.
