Aldi fit factsThe Food and Drug Administration is seeking comments and research about the usefulness of front-of-package nutrition labeling, which it believes might enhance consumer access to information.

The FDA said it is looking for research that assesses and compares the effectiveness of various front-of-pack labeling approaches as well as the effectiveness of certain graphic designs, marketing and point-of-purchase techniques such as shelf labels.

The agency will accept comment until July 28 and provides instructions for sending comments on the FDA website.

Fit & Active productsAs the FDA considers the pros and cons of such nutrition information, Aldi and Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets are ahead of the curve, offering front-of-pack nutrition labeling on their health and wellness lines. Aldi’s Fit & Active line features bold Fit Facts on the front of products(above and left) as does Fresh & Easy’s EatWell line.

Introduced last month, Fresh & Easy’s line includes 17 ready-to-eat prepared meals and sides that contain no more than 25 percent of the daily values for calories, fat, saturated fat and sodium, and contain no artificial colors, flavors or trans fats.
