Doug Palmer, vice president of store brands for The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. (A&P), was named a Brand Innovator 2010, the only store brands retail executive to be recognized this year by Brand Packaging magazine.
“Doug Palmer has made an indelible impression on a long and notable line-up of brands,” the magazine wrote, including O Organics, which he developed during his Safeway tenure and most recently Via Roma, an Italian line developed for A&P.
Other award winners included executives from Frito Lay, Kimberly-Clark, Honest Tea, Unilever UK and The Nest Collective.
Recognized for “tackling giant retail brands head-on,” Brand Packaging magazine said Palmer “writes his own [store brands] playbook. Citing his prior work at Safeway, the magazine said Palmer “spearheaded the development and launch of O Organics and has been credi
ted with rebuilding the Pleasanton, Calif., retailer’s program overall.”
When Palmer joined A&P three years ago, he revamped the grocer’s entire store brands portfolio, including America’s Choice, and introduced several new niche brands including Via Roma, an Italian specialty food label, and Green Way, a natural and organic product line.
Palmer said he is most proud of Via Roma because “we approached it from day one as a stand-alone brand.” For more on Via Roma and Green Way, see "A&P's Store Brands Transformation."
When asked what brands he admired most, Palmer told Brand Packaging: “The brands that haven’t been created yet! Because I know the effort it will take to be successful and compete in an already overcrowded culture of brands.”
