American families are gearing up to spend more than $55 billion this year on back-to-school items and store brands are winning a larger share of the spend, according to The National Retail Federation.
In its 2010 Consumer Intentions and Actions Back to School survey, more than 44 percent of respondents said they plan to buy store brand products this year, up two points from last year’s 42 percent.
Families will spend an average of $606.40 on clothes, shoes, supplies and electronics for school this year, up from $548.72 last year.
Back-to-school season is the second biggest consumer-spending event behind holiday shopping around Christmas, according to NRF. More than 71 percent of those surveyed said they will shop at discount stores for their back-to-school needs, while 54 percent will visit a department store and 31 percent will shop online, up from 22 percent last year.
