Food processing companies with International Featured Standards (IFS) certification for food safety have up to a 17 percent reduction in food recalls than the general market, according to a study by the University of Rostock in Germany

IFS logoCertified companies also realized a 27 percent reduction in complaints related to food safety and food quality and saw as much as a 51 percent reduction in regulatory issues. Furthermore, error rates fell by up to 40 percent, according to the research.

“These are dramatic results we are seeing in companies who have chosen IFS as their Food Safety and Quality Standard,” said Stephan Tromp, managing director of the IFS. “As we continue to expand the IFS brand globally, retailers and their suppliers can have added confidence in the products we offer and the high level of integrity upon which the standards are developed.”

IFS is an umbrella brand for globally recognized standards in food, logistic, household and personal care, broker, and cash-and-carry/wholesale developed by the associated members of the German retail federation, Hauptverband des Deutschen Einzelhandels (HDE), and of its French counterpart, Fédération des Entreprises du Commerce et de la Distribution (FCD), along with input from retailers in Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Spain, and Austria.

IFS Food is a global uniform quality assurance and food safety Standard accepted under the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).
