With a particular focus on children with peanut allergies, Loblaw has expanded its line of store brand peanut-free products –– including cookies, crackers, granola bars and other sweet and savory snacks –– under the President’s Choice and No Name brands.
The 1,000-store operator currently has 50 peanut-free bakery, confectionary and snack products available in its stores.
To ensure peanut-free products are easy for parents to identify, all peanut-free products feature prominent on-package logos and stores have special displays marked with peanut-free signage, “so parents can quickly find snacks suitable for allergic and school-aged children attending peanut-aware schools and childcare facilities,” the company said.
Select stores will also feature a distinctive yellow peanut-free school bus display filled with lunch-friendly snacks. Some bakery departments will offer freshly baked muffins, cookies and brownies made at Loblaw's exclusive offsite peanut-free baking facility.
“For those with a peanut allergy, lack of variety, availability and great taste are often a concern” and it is difficult to properly identify safe products, the company said in a statement. A recent study found that approximately 2 percent of Canadian children (1 in 50) have a peanut allergy.
"As Canada's largest grocery retailer and home to many of Canada's leading brands, Loblaw recognizes the importance of offering peanut-free products and is working towards further expanding the President's Choice and No Name peanut-free lines," said Claudio Gemmiti, Loblaw’s vice president of grocery.
