In light of recent discussion over proper disposal of reusable bags due to lead content, Winn-Dixie voluntary withdrew its private label reusable bags from the market.
The Jacksonville, Fla.-based grocer, which operates 485 stores, invites customers with concerns regarding these bags to return them for a full refund or bring them to any Winn-Dixie store for proper disposal when they have finished using them.
"All available research indicates these bags are safe for their intended customer use," said Robin Miller, Winn-Dixie's director of media and public relations. "There is a need, however, to look at this from a long-term environmental perspective to determine if the potential exists that these bags cannot be disposed of safely. For this reason, we feel it's better to stop selling them now."
The company announced last week that it will work closely with vendors to develop and provide a better solution that conforms to the highest industry standards. The company also is committed to providing input and cooperating with the development of any new standards specific to reusable bags for the grocery industry.
"Ultimately, the original purpose of reusable bags is to protect the environment," noted Miller. "We remain dedicated to that mission, believe this response is consistent with that effort and will continue to pursue solutions that deliver upon that goal."
