Kroger Co. is recalling approximately 10 varieties of three pet food brands –– Kroger Value, Pet Pride and Old Yeller –– because they may be tainted with aflatoxin, a poisonous chemical produced by mold.

Kroger logoThe recall affects Kroger stores in 17 states, mostly in the South and Midwest, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

The company is using its Customer Recall Notification system to alert customers who may have purchased these recalled products through register receipt tape messages and automated phone calls.

At this juncture, Kroger is uncertain how its pet foods became tainted. Aflatoxin is a naturally-occurring toxic chemical byproduct from the growth of the fungus Aspergillus flavus on corn and other crops, Kroger said in a statement.

The tainted cat and dog food can cause lethargy, lose of appetite, yellowish tint to the eyes and/or gums, and severe or bloody diarrhea. Consumers who notice these symptoms in their pets are encouraged to seek veterinary treatment immediately, Kroger noted.

Kroger is offering customers full refunds or product replacement when they return recalled products, which were all manufactured at a Kroger-owned factory in Springfield, Tenn., according to reports.
