A few days ago Aldi opened its first location in New York City and has very high expectations for the store due to the neighborhood’s dense population
"We have very high expectations for this store," said Bruce Pehrson, divisional vice president for Aldi’s Northeast region. "We have the opportunity to serve more than 100,000 people within a mile and a half radius. That exceeds our typical demographics by at least three times."
This is the first of three stores the chain expects in the New York City areas, with two stores in Bronx, N.Y. and Bay Shore, N.Y. expected to open before the end of the year. The limited assortment retailer with a heavy focus on store brands also is considering opening a store in Brooklyn.
Aldi expects to open approximately 81 new stores in the U.S. this year, according to published reports.
The Queens store is located in Rego Center, a shopping area that also includes Century 21, Kohl’s, Costco and Sears.
The biggest difference in the store layout from its traditional stores is it has three times as many checkout lanes, 14 in all, to accommodate anticipated volume.
"How much business we can do here we hope is up to how efficient we can make the front end," said Jason Hart, Aldi’s co-president told Supermarket News. "We don’t have an experience with a store in this dense of a market, but we have huge expectations."
