Kroger Co. plans to remove Bisphenol A from the cans of all its private label products as well as from its customer receipt tape.
The company said it has studied the issue for several years and has concluded that as “an abundance of caution” it plans to offer customers BPA-free canned products and receipt tape. In 2007, the grocer began transitioning to BPA-free infant and toddler products, which has been completed.
“While there is no conclusive scientific evidence that this minimal exposure to BPA in can linings poses any risks to consumers, Kroger has begun a process that we believe will result in the removal of BPA in the linings of canned goods in all of our corporate brand items,” Kroger said in a statement. “We recognize that this transition will take time as our suppliers and manufacturers are still researching and testing feasible alternatives.”
Meanwhile, Kroger is also surveying all of its store brands food suppliers to determine if BPA is present in product packaging.
By the end of the year, the grocer said it will also transition to BPA-free receipt tape. “While much of our current receipt tape is BPA-free, some suppliers still utilize processes that result in the presence of BPA in very small quantities,” the company said in the statement, noting that it has issued new BPA-free specifications.
