A new Wegmans-brand ice cream flavor called “Spikes Play Ball” was unveiled recently at a Rochester location: vanilla with strawberry and blueberry swirls and candy stars. The packaging features the logo of the Red Wings, the local baseball team, a Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, with team mascot Spikes, and the team colors of red, yellow and black.
The ice cream will be sold in Rochester-area Wegmans stores in 48 oz. packages for $2.39.
Cones and dishes of “Spikes Play Ball” can also be ordered at The Food Bar, the Wegmans-owned restaurant adjacent to the store. It will be sampled at Frontier Field after several Red Wings games this season and will be available throughout the baseball season.
The flavor was green-lighted only after much taste-testing, according to the company.
“It’s a fun way to cheer for our hometown baseball team,” said Mike DeCory, vice president of Wegmans brand. “What goes great after hot dogs and baseball? I’d say ice cream! We’ve used only the best to meet Spikes’ demands: fresh milk and cream sourced locally, and premium ingredients.”
Wegmans Food Markets Inc. is a 77-store supermarket chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland.
