Top Care OTC Meds Now Covered by Insurers

Most of Topco Associates LLC’s Top Care over-the-counter (OTC) medications are now covered by many public and private insurers, including Medicare and Medicaid.
Participating stores and their customers will be able to get many prescribed OTC Top Care-brand medications for the lowest available co-pays, according to a Topco statement
“Supermarket pharmacies have always been a great choice for prescription service, and now with Top Care products covered by insurers, it has become an outstanding ‘one-stop’ for prescription savings and convenience,” said Curt Maki, vice president of HBC/GM Program Management and Pharmacy for Topco. “A patient taking a name-brand prescription for heartburn could instead be prescribed the OTC equivalent, Top Care Omeprazole. The insurance co-pay for a Top Care product will likely be significantly less than that of the name-brand prescription and lower than the retail ‘shelf’ price of an OTC Omeprazole drug,” said Maki, who is also a registered pharmacist.
OTC drugs-by-prescription represent a natural next step in driving savings through the use of generic medications, which resulted in $734 billion in savings for the U.S. health care system over the past decade, according to Topco figures. During the next five years, the company said that more than $12 billion in annual sales of brand-name prescription-only drugs could become available as Top Care brand OTC medications.
Sold at banners such as Brookshire’s, Giant Eagle, Raley’s, Stater Bros., Wegmans and Winn-Dixie, Top Care is available at more than 3,000 stores nationwide.
“We are always looking to find new ways for member stores to deliver value in the marketplace and believe the reimbursement of Top Care products by prescription is truly a win for all,” Maki said. “It saves the customer money and reduces drug expenses for health insurers, while increasing brand awareness for our member stores.”
