The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), managed by The Consumer Goods Forum, appointed Walmart’s Frank Yiannas as vice-chair-elect.

As vice president food safety and health for Walmart, Yiannas will replace current vice chairman Yves Rey of Danone when he steps into the role of chairman in February 2012.

GFSI was set up in 2000 to pursue continuous improvement in food safety management systems, cost efficiency in the supply chain and safe food for consumers worldwide.

“The GFSI Board is delighted that Frank has agreed to step up to this challenge and commit to strengthening the position of GFSI around the world,” said GFSI chairman Jürgen Matern. “Frank has already demonstrated great leadership by chairing the Global Food Safety Conference committee over the last 12 months, and through his tenure as vice chair we will continue to develop GFSI as the world’s leading business-driven food safety forum, advancing food safety worldwide. “

Matern also noted that Yiannas will help GFSI build strategic partnerships, and drive greater awareness in regions where the GFSI is not as familiar.

Prior to joining Walmart in 2008, Yiannas spent 19 years as director of safety and health for the Walt Disney World Company. During his tenure, Walt Disney World received the prestigious Black Pearl Award for corporate excellence in food safety by the International Association for Food Protection.

Yiannas is the 2007 recipient of the NSF International Lifetime Achievement Award for Leadership in Food Safety. He is past president of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) and Past Chair of the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network’s board of directors.
