Harris Tea Goes Solar as Part of Sustainability Initiatives

Harris Tea Co., a leading packer of tea and beverages, will start operating their second solar power system on Wednesday, July 20, 2011. The 508.8 kW array consists of 2,212 panels installed on the company’s building on New Albany Rd., Moorestown, NJ and will generate 600,000 kilowatt hours annually offsetting approximately 60% of the sites annual power needs.

A “Harris Tea Goes Solar” ribbon cutting ceremony is planned with key customers and city officials in attendance.

Mr. Ray Borooah, CEO of Harris Tea said, “The New Jersey building solar power project is another major step forward in integrating our sustainability initiatives, focusing on reducing our carbon footprint and investing in the future of our company, products, and customers.” As part of Harris Tea’s overall commitment to sustainability, this new initiative is expected to reduce CO2 emission by more than 450 tons annually, equivalent to eliminating the use of 46,000 gallons of gasoline and avoiding 20 million pounds of green house emissions over the life time of the system.

The project was made feasible with New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program. Harris Tea contracted with California based REC Solar, one of the largest U.S. solar electric providers with more than 6,000 systems built nationwide.
