Kroger, Aldi, Giant Eagle, HEB, Safeway and Spartan stores have pulled earmarked private label and Cargill’s Honeysuckle branded turkey products from freezers and refrigerators stemming from a Cargill Value Added Meats Retail Class I voluntary recall. Approximately 36 million pounds of fresh and frozen ground turkey products produced at the company’s Springdale, Ark., facility from Feb. 20 through Aug. 2 were possibly contaminated by Salmonella Heidelberg.
The recall resulted from Cargill’s internal investigation as well as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) information that became available on Aug. 1, and an ongoing USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) investigation into multiple illnesses from Salmonella Heidelberg, according to a company release.
At least 76 people across 26 states have been sickened from the strain of salmonella. The heaviest concentration of the outbreaks is in Ohio and Michigan, with 10 in Ohio, and 10 in Michigan, according to news reports.
Other affected retailers include Randall’s and Tom Thumb stores, which operate in Texas, and are the only Safeway-owned operations affected by the recall.
Other turkey products from Springdale are not affected by the recall. Products from Cargill's three other turkey processing facilities in the United States are unaffected.
Cargill has suspended production of ground turkey products at its Springdale, Ark., turkey processing facility until it is able to determine the source of the Salmonella Heidelberg and take corrective actions. Other turkey products produced at Springdale are not part of the recall.
