Ground Beef Recall Affects Major Grocers' Store Brands

Retailers earlier this month were forced to recall fresh and frozen ground-turkey products after discovering an antibiotic-resistant strain of Salmonella. Now it’s ground beef in the spotlight as several retailers including Publix, Kroger and Winn Dixie are recalling ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli.
The beef is from Kansas-based National Beef Packing Co., and covers more than 60,000 pounds of ground beef, according to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service. The products are dated from July 23 to August 14 and have “Est. 262” printed within the USDA mark of inspection.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with this recall. The adulteration was found by Ohio Department of Agricultures’ routine microbial testing.
Each grocer has a sizeable amount of product affected under its various store brands. Hardest hit is Publix with almost 30 items recalled including several varieties of burgers and patties, steaks, beef for meatloaf and stuffed peppers. Winn-Dixie has recalled four ground beef products sold in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana and Kroger recalled six items.
All three retailers are offering full refunds and putting up signs online and in stores to notify shoppers.
