Perrigo Cleared to Sell Store Brands Versions of Gerber and Mucinex

Perrigo has received Food and Drug Administration clearance to market and distribute store brands versions of Mucines and Gerber infant formula -- under the Comfort Care label.
The company got clearance from the FDA for its Abbreviated New Drug Application for Guaifenesin Extended-Release Tablets, a new product that compares to Mucinex tablets, which will be packaged under store brands and proprietary brands. Mucinex, an expectorant used to relieve chest congestion, had sales of approximately $146 million through food, drug and mass merchandisers for the last 12 months, according to SymphonyIRI.
Perrigo’s new infant formula is made from100 percent partially hydrolyzed whey protein and designed for babies with fussiness or gas, and will be sold as a nutritionally comparable version of Gerber GOOD START Gentle Infant Formula. The Comfort Care Infant Formula rolls out to leading retailers in 2012. Sales of the national brand are estimated to be $55 million for the latest 52-weeks, as measured by SymphonyIRI.
“Perrigo is pleased to receive clearance from the FDA to market a national brand equivalent of one of the best-selling infant formula brands in the United States. Our presence in the infant formula market is growing,” said Perrigo's Chairman and CEO Joseph Papa.
The California-based maker of private label OTC pharmaceutical products and infant formulas now produced nine varieties of infant formula at most national retailers including Walmart, Sam’s Club, Costco, Target, Safeway, Walgreens and CVS.
The new Comfort Care Infant Formula store brand contains probiotics to support a baby's natural immune system, as well as DHA and ARA to support brain and eye development. Perrigo’s new web site –StoreBrandForumla.com -- features additional product information, shopper coupons and social media links.
