Retailers -- including Giant Eagle, Spartan Stores, Duane Reade and Food Lion -- are playing games with shoppers to promote store brands.

Giant Eagle store imageGiant Eagle is hosting a sandwich contest asking its Facebook fans to create sandwiches using store brands ingredients. “We want to know what type of amazing sandwich can be created by using our Market District Premium Deli Meats and Whole Grain Breads,” the retailer posted on its Facebook page. “The Giant Eagle Ultimate Sandwich Showdown contest starts tomorrow — stay tuned for more details.”

Shoppers can submit and vote on recipes, with first prize winning a $500 Giant Eagle gift card.

Spartan logo imageSpartan stores hosted “Piling On The Pasta,” a one day eating contest to promote its new Super Pasta and sauce. The event took place on December 7 and participants hailed from local schools in the retailers Grand Rapids, Mich. hometown.

Contest winners earned the opportunity to donate $1,000, $500 and $250, respectively, to their favorite charity.

Good & Delish cookies imageMeanwhile, Duane Reade is offering shoppers double points on store brands purchases over the holidays and the opportunity for shoppers to win everything in their basket when they buy at least one Good & Delish private label item. A total of 3,500 baskets are allocated to the contest, which runs through December 31.

And Food Lion’s “Hunger Has a Cure” campaign supports local food banks with donations of ready-made private label foods. The ready-made food boxes contain six items of private label products and are available at Food Lion, Harveys, Reid’s, Bloom and Bottom Dollar Food stores, which customers can buy for $4.99 each and donate. All stores will have a designated food collection area where customers can place the food boxes or other non-perishable items.

This marks the ninth annual event for the North Carolina-based chain, which hopes to donate more than 1.5 million pounds of food valued at approximately $1.2 million, surpassing the amount raised and donated in 2010.
