Outdoor equipment company REI is revamping its packaging to reduce the amount of materials used to yield a lower environmental impact.

REI' plans to do this by reducing overall REI-brand packaging by 25 percent by the end of 2013.

According to a report by Heritage Pioneer, a sustainable packaging solutions provider, REI is making great strides toward its goal. It has:

  • REI has replaced all-plastic PVC clamshell packaging with easier-to-open, paper-based solutions that reduce plastic materials and overall packaging weight;
  • Bikes are now shipped from the factory to REI stores and warehouses four to a box, instead of one per box.
  • REI apparel will soon use hangtags made from 100% Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper.

The company also plans to eliminate all plastic laminates, use lighter paperboard stock, and redesign shipping cartons for greater efficiency and reuse.
